US-based sintered NdFeB capacity build-out could surpass 50,000 metric tons, but will demand keep up? USITC import data for sintered NdFeB magnets in 2025 reports 6,000 tons. Although imports of assembled magnets and finished products are likely at least 10 times higher, even if 20% are reshored, a significant demand-supply gap persists. This suggests some companies may not survive the next decade. Who will come out ahead? As I’ve noted before, the key will be the strength and quality of the human ecosystem, which determines those capable of maintaining competitive domestic production of rare earth magnets. If you’re considering partnering with a non-Chinese NdFeB manufacturer, focus first on their equipment and hardware. But spend most of your time assessing their organization—its expertise, talent, leadership, and culture—since these will determine who succeeds and who doesn’t.
